Bicycle Beano: really special cycling holidays

Shropshire Beano 005

Bicycle Beano cycling holidays are a fine blend of delicious vegetarian cuisine, friendly groups, and brilliant cycling on the idyllic country lanes of Wales, the Welsh Borders and the South and West of England.

Bicycle Beano has been running its own unique type of holiday in Wales and rural England since 1982. We only run holidays in areas that we know and love ourselves; areas we have explored on our own bikes. That means we can introduce you to a cyclist’s paradise: peaceful lanes, ruined castles, half-forgotten villages and gorgeous scenery.

What makes our cycling holidays special?

We believe cycling should be an enjoyable experience. A Bicycle Beano isn’t a training camp or an endurance test, it’s a chance to relax, unwind and spend time exploring some hidden corners of Britain in one of the best ways possible: on a bicycle. Often we’ll encourage you to stop to admire the view, or explore a ruin, or peek inside a quirky village church.

Bicycle Beano holidays are cycling idealism come true – the tours combine the best countryside, the quietest roads, gorgeous accommodation and a superb bounty of home-made vegetarian food. – The Sunday Times

We cycle along with you, but we don’t “lead” the rides – you’ll have a comprehensive route sheet and a daily route talk, so you can set off on your own or join up with others who cycle at a similar speed to you. There’s no pressure to keep up with the group.

You can pick your own pace and distance, taking shortcuts or detours depending on how you feel and still meeting up with the rest of the group for lunch or coffee stops. (A typical day’s ride might be 30-40 miles, with optional detours to take it to 60 or more.)

We take over a large country house or residential retreat for the duration of the holiday, so you can get to explore the area in depth rather than moving on each day. It gives us a chance to relax into the space and get to know each other – it’s the cycling equivalent of a country house party.

Vegetarian catering – Our venues provide yummy vegetarian cuisine, some of it organic and in some cases grown in their own gardens. As one delighted reviewer put it, “…wholesome and filling and so delicious that the meat eaters among us don’t feel we’re missing a thing”.

Every year we run just a handful of carefully-chosen cycling holidays. We don’t franchise our holidays or put our name on other people’s tours: every Bicycle Beano holiday has been carefully designed and planned by us.

Our programme for 2015

In 2015 we will be running three holidays:

Great cycling country and Bicycle Beano are warmly recommended for value for money fun. – Cycling Plus

  •  The Somerset Beano – a brand new holiday on the borders of Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset in south-west England, deep in ancient Wessex and dotted with sites associated with the King Arthur legends.
  • The Snowdonia Beano, in north west Wales. We have run this classic week-long holiday many times over the past 20 years and it’s as popular as ever. Our base  at the foot of the Nantlle Valley gives us a huge variety of scenery, from gentle country lanes to glorious beaches to spectacular mountain scenery.
  • the White Horse Weekend, a long weekend in the Vale of the White Horse, bordered by the Berkshire Downs and the Cotswolds in southern England. Within easy reach of London and the Midlands, the Vale of the White Horse is a flat plain spreading between the Marlborough Downs, the upper Thames Valley and the Cotswolds. It’s a landscape sprinkled with prehistoric monuments and packed with history.

So come and join us for some great cycling, brilliant food and good company on a Bicycle Beano.
